Immersion means that one is submerged i.e. “bathes” in the new language – which at the same time is the working language. In accordance with the principle “one person – one language”, one teacher speaks only German, the other only English. Everything that the foreign language teacher says is additionally reinforced by facial expressions, gestures or pointing. The child independently builds up the language  from the relevance of the situation piece by piece. Indeed, this reflects the natural way in which children learn languages, regardless of whether it is the first or second. For this reason the immersion method is so much more appropriate for children than other methods. It is highly motivational and it succeeds without force or pressure to perform.

Scientific evidence shows that a substantially higher level of foreign language skill can be achieved with immersion than with generic teaching. In addition, both the mother tongue and general learning develop equally well or more proficiently than is the case of monolingual children. Immersion does not overtax a child and is globally recognised as the most successful method of language teaching.

A second foreign language will be introduced using the immersion method from second grade.  It has been proven that this does not place any excessive demands on a child.  Quite the opposite – children who have access to languages from an early age have a better long term cognitive ability and are more tolerant of foreign cultures.
